A Chinese trader has been crowned as a chief in Kano, Nigeria.
Mike Zhang’s new title of Wakilin Yan China, translates to ‘leader of the Chinese residents’ and represents the growing importance of the community in Kano.
The Chinese businessman was given a traditional title in Kano,Nigeria. Mr Zhang will now officially represent Chinese people in Kano’s emirate.
According to report there are over 5,000 Chinese in the city, many of whom are businesspeople.
Mr Zahang was given the traditional Hausa robes and headgear to wear.
Mr Zhang speaking in Hausa, said: “ I will work towards strengthening the relationship between people of Kano,
and the people of our country,China”.
Mr Zhang is due to take part official activities in the emirate, which may include the famous Hausa horse riding festival.
Crowning Mr Zhang as a chief has caused some mixed reactions, As many wondered if a Nigerian man can be crown anything in China. While some see it as a foolishness of the highest level.
